2019 Hyundai Elantra

Overview

The refreshed 2019 Elantra returns with quite a few changes, but the first one you'll notice is its outward appearance, highlighted by a reshaped front end, rear bumper, fenders, and hood. This current model offers three engine choices and six trim levels (SE, SEL, Value Edition, Eco, Sport, and Limited), making it easy for everyone to configure their perfect Elantra. A manual transmission comes standard on the SE and Sport, with an optional upgrade to the dual-clutch SHIFTRONIC automatic transmission with manual mode that the other trims receive.

Safety and Technology

In all but the base trim, the 2019 Elantra offers Hyundai SmartSense, an active safety technology package that features forward collision avoidance, driver attention warning, lane keeping assist, and blind spot collision warning. The top-tier Limited trim is eligible for three additional safety options: adaptive cruise control, an upgraded version of forward collision-avoidance assist that also detects pedestrian presence, and Hyundai's Safe Exit Assist feature, which notifies passengers of oncoming vehicles approaching from behind. Advanced airbags come on all trims as does a rearview camera with guidelines.

A 5-inch high-resolution touchscreen display and a six-speaker audio system come standard as part of the base trim's infotainment system. The SEL and higher get a 7-inch touchscreen with HD radio and SiriusXM (with a 3-month trial subscription). Infinity Premium Audio with eight speakers is available on the Sport and comes standard on the Limited; this upgraded system includes the option to add an 8-inch touchscreen navigation system with SiriusXM Data Services.

In the Value Edition and higher, drivers get to enjoy a power tilt/slide sunroof, keyless touch entry, hands-free trunk release, dual-zone climate control, and the comfort of heated front seats. Hyundai adds a seamless connection to their smartphone via Bluetooth hands-free phone system with added voice recognition. The Limited model adds wireless phone charging.

Engines and Fuel Economy

The 2019 Elantra's first three trims, as well as the Limited, get the base engine, a 2.0-liter 147 horsepower engine. These four trims can achieve up to 29 mpg city and 38 mpg highway, according to EPA ratings. The Eco comes with a turbocharged 1.4-liter engine and gets 32 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. The Sport gets a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine with fuel economy around 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway.

Automatic 6-speed transmissions come standard in the SEL, Value Edition, and Platinum. A manual transmission comes standard in the SE and Sport. A SHIFTRONIC transmission, which allows the driver to override the automatic transmission and manually shift gears, comes standard in all automatic transmission models except for the Eco and Sport, which get an upgraded 7-speed EcoShift dual-clutch transmission with SHIFTRONIC.
