The 2012 Hyundai Azera, which was already introduced in Korea under the Grandeur nameplate, is set to get its North American debut at the New York Auto Show in April. Expected to retain its front-wheel drive layout, the Azera will slot between the Sonata and the Genesis. Although the Sonata recently converted to an all four-cylinder lineup, the Azera is expected to be offered with two V6s - a 3.8L developing 305 horsepower and a 260 horsepower 3.3L. Both engines will be backed by a six-speed automatic transmission.  Badged the Grandeur in Korea, this fifth-generation replacement for the automaker's full-size, front-drive family four-door will receive a number of market-specific tweaks to allow it to conform to U.S. legal requirements and buyer preferences, otherwise the American market 2012 Azera will be very similar to its Grandeur counterpart.

Design of the 2012 Azera

The redesigned Azera gets the evolving face of the Hyundai brand and appears to borrow from the Hyundai Sonata, as well as the Hyundai Equus. The exterior rendering of this new model reflects a 'Grand Glide' concept, or an image of a bird gracefully gliding across the sky. To help foster that image, the 2012 Azera embodies a clean aero-wedge profile with more graceful, flowing contours that are highlighted by a rising hoodline, more steeply raked windshield and an even sleeker roof/side glass treatment. The bolder look of its larger grille and more assertive fascia plus new headlamps and foglamps impart additional presence up front while better-integrated LED taillights bring a similar level of elegant flash to its rear quarters. The side profile is also familiar, sharing some arches with the Sonata. Given Hyundai's stated desire to become a more affordable alternative to both European and Japanese premium sedans, it's virtually certain the 2012 Azera will offer an even longer list of upline standards and high-tech options along with solid value pricing.
