Summary

Responding to the increasing concerns over fuel conservation and the economy, Hyundai is offering a four-cylinder engine as an option on all of its 2008 Sonata trim levels.

Although the Sonata is technically a mid-size car, the cabin is so spacious that the government classifies it as a large car. This can only help it compete against other cars in this class.

Trims and 2008 Styles

Hyundai offers the 2008 Sonata in the GLS, SE and Limited trim levels. The GLS comes with XM Satellite Radio, 60/40 folding rear seat, air conditioning, power windows, cloth upholstery, cruise control, keyless remote, power heated outside mirrors, leather-wrapped tilt steering wheel, and 16-inch steel wheels.

Add the Popular Equipment package and you'll get chrome window belt moldings, power driver seat, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, a trip computer, and automatic headlights.

The sporty SE features 17-inch alloy wheels with high performance tires, solar-control glass, automatic headlights, eight-way power driver's seat,  tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls, fog lights, a trip computer, and chrome window belt moldings.

Or, opt for the top-of-the-line Limited trim level and enjoy heated front seats, telescoping steering wheel, leather, automatic climate control, aluminum bodyside moldings on the outside, chrome center-bar grille, and chrome-accented exterior door handles.

Of course being a Hyundai you can expect great safety features and the 2008 Sonata delivers. The Sonata is equipped with antilock brakes with electronic brake force distribution, electronic stability control, a tire pressure monitor, side curtain airbags, dual stage front seat airbags and front seat side impact airbags.

Interior Design

The inside of the 2008 Hyundai Sonata has changed little since it was introduced in 2006, but that's a good thing. Controls are placed intuitively and the interior lines are smooth and unassuming. Additionally, the cabin provides a quiet getaway from the noises outside.

All trim levels feature the leather-wrapped steering wheel. Additionally passengers will benefit from a rear seat that offers a comfy ride and enough room for most. All seats feature adjustable head restraints.

Overall the inside exudes a quiet confidence that doesn't rely on showiness.

First Drive 2008

Whether you choose the four-cylinder or the V-6 you'll see increased fuel economy and performance over other cars.

The drive is mostly smooth and the car does what you ask it to. And when it's time to stop, the brakes handle well and you're able to stop in a straight line, thanks to the ABS.

2008 Conclusions

With room for a family on the inside, fuel economy, comfort, lots of standard features, and a good overall value, the Sonata presents buyers with an alternative to others in this class. "After years of diligence towards improving quality and attempting to produce a good product at an affordable price, Detroit and the Godzillas of the Pacific Rim are now seriously threatened by the Korean invasion. Sonata attacks!" says BusinessWeek.
